Dubai Is Among The Top Spots In The World To Watch This Month’s Lunar Eclipse

The four-hour celestial spectacle will take place on Friday, July 27…

The longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century is set to take place on Friday, July 27 and it turns out that Dubai is one of the top spots on the planet to watch it play out.
Time compiled a list of the five best places around the globe to catch the four-hour celestial spectacle based on where would have the clearest skies and the longest window of time it will be visible in the night sky.
Other optimum viewing spots include Cario, Santorini, Limassol and Harare in Zimbabwe.
The eclipse will begin at 11.30pm local time on Friday, July 27 and last until 1.13am on Saturday, July 28.
The article recommends heading inland to catch the eclipse as there will be less cloud cover, or even booking a room in one of Dubai’s many skyscraper hotels.
We suggest heading out with the star-gazers of the Dubai Astronomy Group who are holding an event at the Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre in Mushrif Park to mark the occasion

You Can Now Learn To Surf At Dubai’s Newest Water Park

If you’ve ever wanted to ride the crest of a gnarly wave but were afraid to go it alone, then we have some good news.
Laguna Waterpark in La Mer is holding daily stand-up surf lessons where you can hone your skills before heading out onto the open sea. Running daily from 10am to 8pm, aspiring surfers will learn to go from a body board to a proper surfboard, getting all the thrill of riding a real ocean wave along the way.
This is thanks to the water park’s star attraction – the WaveOZ 180 FlowRider (aka the Ultimate Surf Machine), a 180-degree surfing machine that simulates real waves and can be divided into multi-rider options.

For those after more advanced training, World FlowRiding Champion Clayton Baker will also be holding a weekly flowriding class called 180 Flow Club. Taking place every Saturday from 8am to 11am, participants will learn moves unique to flowriding’s mashup of surfing, bodyboarding and skateboarding. 180 Flow Club classes are limited to 20 per session so be sure to book yours early.
Stand-up surfing classes cost Dhs75 per hour, with 180 Flow Club sessions priced at Dhs175. These prices are additional to general admission to Laguna Waterpark.

Queen Elizabeth 2 Docks In Dubai

Dubai: Nearly 10 years after the world’s most famous ocean liner steamed into its new home of Dubai, Queen Elizabeth 2 is set for a soft opening on April 18 at its new permanent home of Port Rashid.

Invitations went out on Thursday to media in an informal announcement that the QE2 will serve a new life as an upscale hotel designed to help boost Dubai’s aim of becoming a world-class tourist destination.
By invitation only, journalists will be given a limited tour of the former Cunard liner at its new home of Cruiser Terminal 1, Port Rashid Marina.
Hamza Mustafa, CEO of the new hotel group belonging to the ship’s new owners Port, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), is scheduled to be on hand to mark the historic new opening.
A new website www.qe2 has gone live online in recent weeks promising “Coming Soon” and teasing would-be visitors with an invitation to experience “a new taste on hospitality” strongly suggesting the cruise liner’s golden years will serve as a hotel and accommodation landmark.
The website says the new QE2 venture is now hiring and lists Cruise Terminal 1, Port Rashid Marinas as QE2’s new address where signs at the welcome centre tout QE2 as the next big thing.
The QE2 sailed into Gulf waters on November 26, 2008 and was welcomed by an armada of bobbing yachts in light seas as an overhead fly-past by an Emirates A-380 aircraft announced her arrival.
Christened by the Queen in 1967, the QE2’s arrival marked the end of her final voyage capping a logbook of 40 years that recorded 5.6 million nautical miles, including 25 world cruises, 801 Atlantic crossings and 1,408 individual voyages.
